iPhone Vodafone EDGE APN

I’m blogging this for Google, hopefully others find it and get it sorted faster then I did! When I connected my iPhone to Vodafone, I got the error, “Could not activate EDGE: you are not subscribed to EDGE”. You need to update your settings on your iPhone in: Settings > General > Network > EDGE, however I didn’t know what my settings should have been for Vodafone. If you have the same problem, enter the following:

  • APN: internet
  • Username:
  • Password:

(yes, Username & Password are blank, that isn’t a mistake!)

Fantastic - I had the same problem typed in ‘internet’ under APN and it works.

    Thanks!!!

  2. alex Says:

  3. rob Says:

Thanks so much - this has been driving me mad for the past few days. :-)

  5. Mark Wilson Says:

    Hi Dave,
Interested to read this as I’m considering buying a US iPhone next week (cheaper than the UK model) and then getting it working on my Vodafone SIM… how have you found the whole experience? I’m concerned that I’ll use my meagre 120MB of data up pretty quickly and that I might have problems with using an unactivated US iPhone in the UK.

    Am I worrying unnecessarily?

    Cheers, Mark

  6. Dave Says:

@Mark Wilson: the experience was fine, and if your happy to deal with the risks of Apple bricking it, software being a little behind, etc, then sure do it.

Personally I don’t think Vodafone deserve loyalty from their customers - if I wasn’t in a contract I’d have left Vodafone because their data package is awful. I was going over 120Mb of data before they had a data package!!

If I was paying for an iPhone I’d have waited until they officially launched in the UK, and paid the extra to not worry, and never worry… I’d wait if I were you.

  7. Mark Smith Says:

I thought vodafone were just gprs or 3G, but no Edge. Can you get useful data from unlocked iPhone over vodafone?

  8. Dave Says:

@Mark Smith: yes, you get access to any data you so wish.

EDGE and GPRS are similar, and are both technically 3G networks I believe (which I never understood they are 2.5G and 2.75G), so there is no problem there. Check out the wikipedia page:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enhanced_Data_Rates_for_GSM_Evolution

Vodafone I’m sure have their eye on all mobile communication standards, they seem to be pushing HSPA, it is after-all a longer term strategy.

  9. Mark Wilson Says:

    Hi David,
Thanks for being so candid. I’m in the States right now and I actually bought an iPhone last night; however after I’d added the sales tax it wasn’t really that much less expensive than a UK model will be after it is launched on Friday, so I’m thinking of returning it unopened and buying one at home, with warranty (no warranty on an unlocked phone, or even on an AT&T phone being used on an authorised network outsideits intended market).

As for Vodafone - after one of the sales people in Vodafone’s customer retention department called me in the middle of the night (he didn’t know that I was 8 timezones away but I had asked him not to call me and after 2 missed calls you might thin he had got the message), I think they may have just lost a customer…

    Mark

  10. Dave Says:

@Mark Wilson: And now with O2’s CEO saying “customers find unlimited with limits confusing”, (no shit sherlock!) it’s probably worth the wait…

  11. Matt Auckland Says:

I have been buying iPhones in for a friend Steve at The Mobile Phone Site.co.uk for the past 3 months from USA. Got a great deal going with a US Ebayer, and spent well over $2000 dollars with him so far, and bought a total of 7 phones. I calculated that on the last batch we saved £127 buying 4 from the US then the UK, and they arrived on Monday!

Just bought another batch of 4 iPhones in and these ones are 1.1.1 version…..AHHH, but fear not I found this wicked site and the unlock works like a charm. Easy and simple with all the iTunes WiFi Store and YouTube functions working like a charm.

Check out iphone.unlock.no for the full guide.

Need any help then email me at info@laughingbuddha.info

Your Edge work-around was the last puzzle I had to sort out. You are a legend my friend! And at last I get my own iPhone now I have sold enough!!! Good by 1 year old Sony P990i and hello iPhone 1.1.1 Hurrah!

Now time to get Doom and NES Emulator on it!

  12. elvis Says:

guys the info on edge saved me loads of time - many thanks. anyone had experieicne of setting up hotmail , googlemail and yahoo.co.uk accounts on iphone?

  13. Richard Says:

Thanks and hanks again! type in internet and Bobs your uncle (or in my case father in law). The last piece of the jigsaw is now the voicemail! Any one got any ideas on this one? Thanks again

  14. chris brain Says:

THANK YOU very much for this conversation. I’ve just bought an unlocked iPhone from the States, planning to use it with my Vodafone sim. I called Vodafone asking for their EDGE settings, and was told Vodafone doesn’t support EDGE. I was thinking about moving suppliers until I read this. Tried the settings mentioned above and hey presto, internet and maps are now working just fine. Thanks again guys.

  15. stef Says:

I have just tried using the settings on a iPhone using the vodafone network but cannot get the gprs connection working. The E symbol is displayed. Everytime you try and connect using safari it just displays a message saying you are not subscribed to an edge network.

  16. Tye Says:

    SOMEONE HELP!

I have an unlocked u.s version currently on Vodafone but used to be AT&T and it is in the UK now. I can’t activate the edge with the method above. Someone help me please!

  17. Phil Says:

Yes it works - fantastics - thanks so much.

  18. TheSol Says:

hey, does it cost to use edge from a vodafone iphone?

  19. Dave Says:

@TheSol: Yes! Vodafone is over priced, and I plan to move to the “official” o2 contract when the iPhone has a better camera on-board.

  20. SarahG Says:

Thanks for this solution .. now able to get my mail on iphone on Vodafone but do have a question. Got a US unlocked version and it’s working fine. Great when on wi-fi but bit slow on GPRS.

I’m moving from a Blackberry and hence want good email functionality.

At the moment if I get a mail on iPhone, it doesn’t subsequently download into Outlook later when I get home. This isn’t ideal as I may want to keep mail or reply later. Any solution to this one? Or is this the nature of using POP?

  21. Mathew Webb Says:

    Hi Dave

I have updated the APN settings as suggested but still get the same error message about not being subscribed to edge. Any other ideas?

    Thanks

    MATT

  22. Lesa Says:

I have been stupid enough to upgrade my iphone to 1.1.1, my sim is locked and I cann’t get access to wifi, as my sim is locked, I am really pissed off and should have left things as they were, please can somebody help me?

    Lesa

  23. Dave Says:

@SarahG: GRPS will be slower then your Blackberry, nothing you can do about that! Nature of POP3, no, I don’t use POP3, but there might be a setting that tells it to keep it on the server.

@Mathew Webb: a few people seem to have this problem. On your old phone with Vodafone could you connect to the internet? Are you on contract or pay-as-you-go?

@Lesa: it’s not broken, it can be done. Find yourself a geek to help you out.

  24. Mathew Webb Says:

My old phone worked fine on WAP and I am on a contract. Any ideas?

  25. Dave Says:

@Mathew Webb: do you pay for the £7 (i think) a month internet package?

  26. Mathew Webb Says:

No I don’t. Will that make the difference?

  27. jimmy Says:

Hi, i just bought an iphone from the states with AT&T sim on it. i have activate the iphone and i believe i have unlock it as well using the instructions from youtube. but i get no reception when insert the uk sim.
when i use 3g sim it says no service and when i put voda sim it says: incorrect sim- this iphone must be used with an approved sim.
can anyone help on this issue, please?

  28. Dave Says:

@Mathew Webb: I’ve no idea… but, if you do sign up and that affects it, please let me know.

@jimmy: sounds like it’s not successfully been unlocked, I’d RTFM again.. (unlocking I find takes one or two attempts each time!)

  29. Mathew Webb Says:

    Hi Dave

I have signed up and it still doesn’t work. I noticed above that someone else with an AT&T unlocked phone is having the same issues. Any more ideas would be great because apart from the internet problem, the phone is great.

  30. Flip_per Says:

I have been through the trauma of this error and every other error imaginable.

I finally managed to get my iPhone working by revirginising it (scary) using a combination of instructions from here, instructions from there, etc until I got back to firmware version 1.0.2 (from 1.1.1).

I then went through the 1.1.1 firmware upgrade and used iPhoneSimFree to do the unlock.

My advice is don’t bother with SSH wireless clients to get to the underbelly of the iPhone, use iBrickr. I wasted 2 evenings and an earthquake in Ecuador to bring this useful piece of information.

Buy iPhoneSimFree from a legit on-line reseller (they don’t sell direct so don’t bother going to their site).

anySIM didn’t work for me but that may not be the fault of anySIM, my phone just may not have been ready for it when I tried.

Another tip is don’t waste money buying advice that is freely available on the web. Plenty of unscrupulous people are flogging this free information so don’t get caught out.

These guys are the best source of free info

I brought my copy of IPSF from http://www.dropthelock.com. Just make sure you wait until you get their email confirmaiton BEFORE trying to install IPSF otherwise your IMEI details will not have been updated in the IPSF database.

    Phil

  31. Chris Says:

thanks for the advice. Edge works perfectly with my vodaphone SIM.

When using outlook (exchange server) calendar appointments do not come through to the email.
    has anyone got that working?

    thanks
    Chris

  32. Ferg Riley Says:

hi, im thinking of buying an iphone for my son, just wondering the following if anyone would be kind enough to help before i buy him one, he wants it on his exsisting cheap contract!

    1) can the 1.1.2 version be downgraded to the 1.1.1 so unlocking can be done or is just on the original 1.1.1.

    2) hes on vodaphone, and has a standard contract, if i pay the 7.50 extra unlimeted internet bolton, will that give unlimited browsing on safari, and will it be a reasonable speed.

    thanks alot

  33. Dave Says:

@Mathew Webb: I’ve heard these settings might work, but I’ve yet to find someone to confirm that, but could try it:

    APN address: wap.vodafone.co.uk
    Username: wap
    Password: wap

@Ferg Riley: Yes, I believe you can downgrade as well as upgrade - but it’s not a fun process.

And, no, Vodafone doesn’t have an unlimited data package, I believe it’ £7.50 for 120Mb. O2 has the best data package in the UK IMHO, for that reason alone I’d get an iPhone & official o2 contract, Vodafone doesn’t deserve customers (i’m waiting for my contract to end).

  34. nathan murphy Says:

spot on settigs, very helpful indeed

    thanx a million times!!!!!!!!

  35. juff Says:

‘internet’ in the APN worked for me - thanks

anyone had success using an iphone to send email on vodafone?

got the receive settings working fine but I cant send

I’ve tried setting the smtp server to send.vodafone.net which worked on my last phone and making sure the port is set to 25 but no joy

  36. Dave Says:

@juff: I’m using my gmail account, and it works a charm :)

  37. Vanessa Says:

I have an unlocked O2 UK iphone 1.1.2 Everytime I try to connect to the internet I get the message Could not activate EDGE: you are not subscribed to EDGE
I have tried the suggestion as above but I have VPN not APN under Network I really don’t know what to do?! Can any one out there help?

  38. Dave Says:

@Vanessa: on the screen where you have EDGE, VPN, and Wi-Fi you need to click on EDGE, and in there is the APN input box

  39. Aidan Says:

    Hi Guys,Gals
Got an unlocked USA Iphone, works perfectly on Vodaphone sim, EDGE connected fine , yahoo email and all. Have been trying to get a vodafone PAYT sim to work on it.APN setting is internet but i am still getting the “Could not activate EDGE: you are not subscribed to EDGE” message.
Any experiences of this out there. Once i get my UK PAYT sim working on , hope to get Austrian PAYT sim on EDGE.
PS health warning, £5 a go every time i connected to email/web when abroad- horrendous roaming charge.
Finally, having had the iPhone for three weeks, cannot praise it enough as a great alrounder.no connection to Apple!

  40. Aidan Says:

Just seem to have answered my own question.PAYT booklet has APN setting of pp.vodafone.co.uk. now works on PAYT. One page downloaded cost 35p. now to find Austrian EDGE equivalent….. interested in any other findings however.

  41. Vanessa Says:

    Hi Dave,
Thanks for your reply, however I’m really sorry to say that still cannot find the elusive APN.
From Settings then to Network, I have VPN, Wi-Fi and Data Roaming either “on or off”
From VPN I go to VPN with a slide button “on/off” under that is Settings.
Both these buttons take me to “Enter your VPN account information” There are then two choices L2TP or PPTP with Server, Account, RSA SecurID, Password, Secret and Send all traffic below these titles.
None of this makes any sense to me, abit of a techno-phobe I think!!! Do I need to sign up for an O2 “bolt-on” for internet use as I only have O2 PAYG at the moment?
I’m sorry to be a pain, but if there’s anything you can suggest I’d appreciate it.
    Cheers
    Vanessa

  42. Mathew Webb Says:

Still no joy on my Vodafone SIM using just about every APN suggested. Is anyone else continuing to have problems with an AT&T unlocked phone?

  43. GIANCARLO Says:

I have a US iPhone unblocked. EDGE works great with VODAFONE Italy.
    Thank you very much

  44. Dave Says:

@Vanessa: In Settings > General > Network > VPN do you have a VPN setup? Try disabling that. If you don’t use a VPN, go into VPN settings and check ‘Reset VPN Settings’. That’s my last idea at the moment.

@Mathew Webb: all out of ideas I’m afraid.

  45. Mathew Webb Says:

My Vodafone SIM now works with internet. There was a problem with the network settings on the SIM so worth checking with Vodafone if you have no joy

  46. Paul Says:

Can someone help. I have a US iphone. It was not tied in to AT&T or any network. My vodafone sim works fine in it to make calls. When I go to “settings” > “General” > “Network”, there is no EDGE option to enter the APN. Do I need to connect to iTunes and activate something in some way first?

    Help

For Aussie Vodafone users (who have data access in their plan) the APN is:

    vfinternet.au

    Username & Password remain blank.

  54. Nev Says:

Would i risk locking the phone doing this..??

  55. Nev Says:

Ok…. well i went for it & did the reset network settings thing..

Phone restarted & i now have the Edge service back… altho i still don’t have any Edge settings in the network bit… but it works.. apart from you tube…. but i can get my mail so i’m happy with that.

  56. SouLJaH Says:

For all you who still have problems, this should work

    APN: pp.vodafone.co.uk
    username: wap
    password: wap

i have Pay as you go vodafone sim, the settings works fine. its free to browse on safari, and to check weather. i got charged to uninstall an application using installer though, and yeah, i tried youtube, got charged too! from 0.29P now am on 0.00, oh am so poor! :-( and if you are a broke ass like me, you are never going to be able to browse again, you need some credits even if its to just browse on safari :-P hope this helps u all, and yeah, hope u forget and use the youtube so we are both poor! Har Har Har!

  57. Cooper Says:

iPhone in: Settings > General > Network > EDGE, however I didn’t know what my settings should have been for Vodafone. If you have the same problem, enter the following:

I called vodafone and they said i have full access on my account.

  59. andy Says:

you are a star it works

  60. Steve Says:

I lost my Vodafone (UK) BlackBerry 8800 in a New York taxi, so bought an unlocked one there and got a replacement SIM from Vodafone when I returned to the UK. Everything seems to work fine, except for two things - the phone displays an AT&T logo on startup, and caller-ID has gone wonky. Some callers only display if I have entered their number with the +44, others if I haven’t. My worry is that the phone still thinks it’s in America - and is charging my firm accordingly! I don’t see the bills, but if if that’s the case I’m going to be in trouble! Any ideas (a) whether this fear is true, and (b) how to completely reset the BlackBerry back to Vodafone? Cheers.

  61. adam Says:

Thank you!!!! as many other people have also said, i was about to swith providers as voda told me they didnt support edge! so finding this is BRILLIANT!!!! i can now use my mail on the go! (Even if it is bloody slow!)

  62. Fez Says:

Bought mobile from US - everything works great except for edge problem. Vodaphone and my own I.T department were unable to sort. Even considering O2 contract - but thanks to you 5 seconds later and its all sorted. Many thanks. I will now keep my iphone.

  63. Jonathan Says:

Just got a turbo sim and now going through everything. first of i found the wap.vodafone.co.uk settings but they did not work for me. the “Internet” one worked straight away so thanks. but i don’t get a edge logo, just a blue box, anyone know what’s up with that?

If anyone needs to set vodafone voicemail do the following:
Click on the phone button in your iPhone. Click on the keypad tab.
Tap the following code: *5005*86*121# Tap call. After a second, the code will have been set. Tap now on the voicemail button and it will automatically call your usual voicemail service

Finally if anyone thinks the official O2 contract is any good i would have to disagree, £35 per month for 18 months is crazy espeially when you’ve just bought a £269 phone. Okay you get unlimted data but you won’t use much edge unless your gonna sit there for ages and wait for pages to load. My US iphone cost me £212, £15 turbo sim. just recently upgrading for a new blackbery sold on ebay for £230, contract for 12 months, 200 mins anytime any network 500 texts 120mb for £20. I will only be using edge for the push emails which works perfectly with my yahoo account!

  64. kieran Says:

how did you activate your iphone with vodafone because im being told you have to get a contract with o2, did you unlock it?

  65. Dave Says:

@kieran, yes. My iPhone is unlocked & jailbroken. The latter means you can install third party applications.

  66. marc Says:

have a new us iphone unlocked to uk voda - contract
    setting for me are
    internet
    webs
    webs

everything is working fine and to have the option of having one device is dreamy, blackberry will no longer be needed but am worried about edge charges, i get 60ish emails a day, is that going to be 60 x 35p per day ?

    Any advice chaps ?

  67. Dave Says:

@marc, Vodafone in the UK have a data package, 120Mb a month for £7 or so. It’s not as good as the official O2 contract, but it’ll do.

  68. Lewis Says:

Hi there guys, I have an unlocked iphone I bought in Shanghai, I think it is the US version. Am on Vodafone UK but can’t get edge to work, still have the “Safari can’t open the page because it could not connect to the server” error followed by the “Could not activate EDGE: You are not subscribed to Edge” error, I have tried “internet webs webs”, I also used “internet, space, space”, and internet wap wap. I called Vodafone and I have the £7.50 a month 120mb plan. Any help would be greatly appreciated! My phone was unlocked by iSim.

    Thanks!
    Lewis

  69. Dave Says:

@Lewis, it’s not “internet, space, space” it’s “internet, blank, blank”

  70. Shaun Says:

I had edge working on my US phone with 1.1.2 OTB, jailbroken on vodafone. Having just upgraded to 1.1.3 using ibricker, I cannot get EDGE to work, same error that is described in these posts. Previously internet for the APN worked a treat. Now when you type it in (or anything else for that matter) and hit return it takes you back to home screen… any clues ?

  71. Lewis Says:

Hi there Dave, sorry I did enter in blank blank, and I still got the same error message.

  72. alex Says:

Hi there, for t mobile, just type general.t-mobile.uk under APN.

  73. Lewis Says:

    Hi there Dave,

I also had troubles sending texts, I went to the shop that unlocked my phone and he said that I should try with a new sim card as my old sim card was years old. I gave it a go and I can text now, I still can’t access Edge though. The unlocker guy set my edge settings to “internet, blank, blank” and it works for his Vodafone sim card but not mine. How strange is that? I called Vodafone and they said I am set up with the 120MB for £7.50 a month so it should work. What do you think?

    Lewis

  74. Lewis Says:

Oooops, I meant to say he set my edge settings to “internet, web, web” and it works with his sim card but not with mine. Do I need Vodafone to send something to my sim card to activate it? Should I do that on my old phone?

  75. Dave Says:

@Lewis, if you get can it working on your old phone you know the problem isn’t with your sim card anymore, so, yes, do that.

  76. Lewis Says:

Woohoo! Spoke to a very helpful guy in Vodafone Customer services names Simon …. he looked further into my issue and knew a bit about edge and gprs and was fine with me nattering to him about how my sim card doesn’t work on my iphone but my mate’s does. He checked what the other four Vodafone people checked, ie. that I was activated for the £7.50 a month 120mb deal, but then looked into my setup and could see that I was not activated for internet, and that that was a further setting in some other part of the system. He activated it and now I’m on Edge …. result!

Thanks for your help Dave, this is an awesome blogg.

Oh, my edge settings are : internet, web, web.
    Lewis

  77. Shaun Says:

I have upgraded my phone to 1.1.3, from a JB 1.1.2 OTB, EDGE used to work on 1.1.2, but not since upgrading, it just bombed out… but found this tip in another blog .. and all working OK now

For those who have problems with EDGE settings just go to Settings-General-Reset-Reset network settings and it will work.

It worked for me ..good luck

  78. rusty100 Says:

hi all… i have just put installer on to my iphone and cant get the APN settings back for my Vodafone iphone, any ideas of pword, usename etc? im on 1.1.3 :( thanks!

  79. Lewis Says:

    Heya Everyone,

Probably a silly question, but can anyone get Youtube working on iphone with Vodafone GPRS? ie. when they are not on Wifi? I get the message Youtube videos require an EDGE or Wi-fi connection.

    Thanks!
    Lewis

  80. Shaun Says:

    Lewis,

there is a you tube fix, you will find it on Nate True blog

  81. Shaun Says:

    Rusty,

    I’m on 1.1.3 on Vodafone

    APN: internet

in the APN box, there is no user name or password. It works fine for me

  82. Nick UK Says:

    YOU ARE LEGEND!

GPRS works great! WOW! That was doing my head in! By the way to someones earlier post, the E sign only occurs when u are on a legit O2 contract, as EGDE is only O2’s format. The blue box indicates GPRS standard, which just goes to show this was meant to be hacked and will soon open up on all networks! So screw you O2!!! LOL!

  83. Ronnie Says:

OMG!!! Thank you all SO MUCH!!! I was going to give up on my totally locked phone I bought in New York back in September…which obviously locked after I updeted it to 1.1.1……

With the help of the brilliant website already mentioned iphone.unlock.no and this site to get EDGE back on my Vodafone SIM…..I am back in business!!!! Thank you to you all very clever people!

  84. ian Says:

Using an Iphone I bought in Hong Kong with the little sim adaptor and 1.1.2 on Vodafone all is open and all apps work fine email net etc. COOL!! You think I’d be happy, but having just had a play with with an iphone in the apple shop running the 1.1.3 firmware I would like to upgrade mine. Anyone had any experience of doing this?

  85. Dave Says:

@ian, I’ve not, but I’ve heard from friends that they have.

  86. Georgina Says:

    Hi there

I’ve done the unlocking thing, the ibrikr, jailbreak etc and can access the internet, have EDGE, but can’t get my iphone to recognise my Vodafone sim, says “incorrect sim” or something. Tried using anySIM but this just froze the phone and had to start again. Its now on 1.1.2, and everything else is working fine, just not the sim to allow me to text or call anyone.

    Any ideas????

  87. Dave Says:

I upgraded my 1.1.2 unlocked iphone to 1.1.3 this week. All apps and sim work fine. However Edge is not working even though it used to. There are no settings under the general/network to allow you to enter APN pwd etc.

    Any help would be appreciated.

  97. Jeff Says:

    Help, EDGE doesn’t work
    - click Installer-icon on iPhone,
    - click Install-icon, scroll down and click Utilities,
    – scroll down and click BossPrefs, click Install, click Install, wait a little…
    - click home-button, slide “slide to unlock” to the right
    - click BossPrefs-icon on iPhone,
(if gui shows that Wifi is off, even if you see the Wi-Fi-icon on the statusbar: click ON)
    - Edge: click ON (ie. you turn it off), wait a little, click ON again
If you now wish that EDGE shall always be turned off: click ON (ie. you turn off to OFF)

    Works fine on WiFi
But whenever I try I get the dreaded you are not subscribed to EDGE

Hi there, I bought an iphone from the US and unlocked it. It works fine with 02 chips in the UK but I have a contract with 3 and I can’t get the chip to work. Should the iphone work with this chip or is there problems because it is a 3g network?

    Thx

  106. Gadget Says:

    *** Problem Solved !!! ***
I have been having the ‘You are not subscribed to EDGE’ problem on Vodafone since I got my jailbroken/activated/unlocked 1.1.3 iphone.. Having tried my wife’s Vodafone sim in the phone, which worked flawlessly, I called Vodafone and spoke to a very helpul young lady.. She told me the my ‘Internet APN’ was not active, although I had the 120Mb package on the account… As soon as she activated this, I was online!! Apparently APN is deactivated as the hadset will try to connect by this as default, deacivating it forces access through WAP.. (All double Dutch to me, but its sorted!!)

  107. UKTony Says:

If you cannot see the EDGE menu in settings >> general >> Network >> EDGE, you will need to put in a sim card from a DIFFERENT network to make the menu appear. You may then put in the settings and then put back in your usual sim.

Hi, I upgraded my iphone from 1.1.3 to 1.1.4 at the weekend and although it worked and the handset was fine it locked me out of itunes. I found ZiPhone unlocking software for free, downloaded it and it worked like a dream! their site states they now support 1.1.4. I am totally back to normal now :) Have internet running fine with EDGE setting on as well but have never seen the E in the blue box, have a friend on Orange with an iphone and he gets the E in the blue box so it’s not just an o2 thing - anyone seen the E on vodaphone?! Also found a neat program to store youtube videos so you don’t have to download every time at http://www.dvdvideosoft.com

Hi all. I bought an unlocked iphone for my wife at Christmas. I’ve learnt a lot since then, locking and unlocking it several times with the help of iphone.unlock.no and most recently upgraded to 1.1.4 using ZIPhone. The phone now stores EDGE settings and I’ve tried all the above - currently on APN ‘internet’, Username ‘web’ and password ‘web’ - and no joy (with the Wi-Fi off safari can’t find server). Am I right that VPN doesn’t need to be configured and data roaming should be ‘off’?

  121. Jonny Says:

I was running on Vodaphone with internet working but never saw the E in the blue box. Now gone onto o2 for work and switched SIMs so o2 in the iphone got the E in the blue box straight away. Any tips on changing batteries, is it possible at all?

Jonny I live in DN3 never got the E on voda or anywhere else in the UK tried all the dif settings! - if your just after You Tube videos don’t bother with edge download anyway it’s very slow, I would recommend http://www.dvdvideosoft.com browse the vids on your PC this S/W then lets you store them on your iphone via itunes , really simple to use! You can then watch and show friends without having to wait for a slow download every time.

Just got an unlocked iphone from the states but have error message that not registered for Edge.

I´m in Spain on vodafone contract with previous phone being Blackberry Pearl with email and browsing facilities.

Can anyone explain what to do or I will have to revert to the Blackberry as email is essential.

    Thanks

  147. David Stone Says:

Neil, unlucky. I believe in Spain your service provider lock the contract to your Blackberry’s IMEI, meaning no other device can access the data package.

  148. Neil Says:

I cant believe it, I´ve waited all this time and cant use it as wished, any ideas out there for what to do next.

I’ve just got a new iphone, had it unlocked and my vodafone sim card works in it but does not show my contacts at all. The iphone was a gift, I don’t know anything about it so I may be asking a stupid question but I assumed my sim info would show up automatically - maybe not??!! Can anyone help?

  152. Elle Says:

Hi all, this might be a very girlie email but I was just given an iphone as a birthday present this week. It didn’t come with a contract and was already unlocked. I have a Vodafone Pay as you go SIM which I put in. Everything seems to be working rather well however I do not have access to the Edge service. I put the wpa settings in as mentioned above and I do get a blue square on the top left corner however it says I am not subscribed to Edge.

What do I need to do to get that working? I am not bothered about changing numbers but I want to get it right or changing networks. Any suggestions?

    Thanks.

  153. Jog Says:

Further to initial message, I have now selected the install/productivity/isim option which shows up my sim contacts but it does not allow me to transfer the contacts onto my phone as it says I am not registered! Any ideas as to what to do next?!! Thanks :-)

Looked it up on a whim this morning & your technique works a treat. Got a lot of love for you right now, wherever you are… Am only sorry I didn’t think to look online before.

  182. thinkjim Says:

Big JD - yes you will be charged if you connect to the internet via GRPS. Vodafone data rates are pretty high. My bill went up from £40 to £70 in one month. However you can add “unlimited” mobile internet and email to your vodafone contract. I think its about £7.50 a month.

You can subscribe by texting WEBPACK to 97613.

For those people with an unlocked iPhone trying to use an O2 pay and go SIM but can’t find EDGE settings, this worked for me:

Turn off your phone and eject the SIM card, now turn the phone back on (minus the SIM) and EDGE should now appear under SETTINGS-GENERAL-NETWORK, change the APN to payandgo.o2.co.uk and leave the other settings. Now insert your SIM while the phone is still at this screen and switched on. you should now be able to use the internet but not the youtube icon for some reason. The EDGE setting will disappear once you have left this screen but the settings will be saved. Hope this helps.

  194. JK Says:

Hi Dave - quick question you may be able to help with. If I buy a Vodafone iPhone in a country where they are legally sold - can I then bring it back to the UK, and use it with Vodafone in the UK? Would that work? Would it require anything funky? And would I run the risk of bricking it? I’m looking for a totally legal way of using an iPhone 3G in the UK, on Vodafone. Any ideas? I’d be happy to consider going to any lengths…!

  195. Paul Hanleu Says:

I used just internet in my apn settings and it works fine with the 3G iphone. No drop in signal and no loss of calls. I Didnt go the jailbreak root I just got a http://www.any-network.com card.

    Dave,

    another plea for help.

ive just upgraded the firmware in the iPhone to version 2.1 and have successfully ‘jailbroken’ the unit. however i get no signal at all when i insert my vodafone sim. help? is there a fundamental step which i am missing?

any assistance right now would be appreciated.

    many thanks.

    Steve

  207. david Says:

steve are you using an unlock sim? jailbreaking the iphone won’t unlock it for voda, you need a sim hardware unlock chip (about 15£)

  208. Dave Says:

    @david that’s not true.

Hi Steve. Jailbreaking the phone allows you to install third party applications separately from Apple’s App Store. You need to unlock your phone as well.

You can do this via either a hardware hack (TurboSim) or using software — I’ve used both. If I remember correctly the software for macs is Pwnage 2.0, if you’re using a PC I’m of little help.

  209. david Says:

hmm. have new payg 02 3g ifone on firmware 2.1 which i have unlocked with turbo sim and running on vodafone, but there is no “edge” option in the network settings menu, only apn or vpn. have tried all passwords but safari not connected to internet message keeps appearing. tricky. any ideas?

  210. Steve Says:

    Hi Dave and David,

    many thanks for your help.

yes i was trying to unlock it using software but cannot find any means of getting the app on to the iphone.

I am using a PC to run quickpwn, and the new version seems to unlock the 2.1 firmware in a matter of minutes, its the ‘after-care’ and how to get the blasted sim to work that’s missing.

I had seen a few unlock tutorials that preach the use of ‘anysim’ that could be installed straight on to the phone with the use of installer of Cydia.

    ie.
    connect to wireless
    open installer
find ‘anysim’ under ‘all programs’, and that’s it! phone unlocked, everyones happy!

however it seems that with the 2.0.2 and 2.1 firmware, this option for browsing all programs is greatly reduced and does not contain the same number of apps as discussed on other forums.

Is there a web address for the ‘anysim’ hack that you can add to installer programme that will allow the iPhone to download the app? at the moment it seems that i cannot access the other 3rd party apps after the phone has been jailbroken (with quickpwn 2.1-1).

am i barking up the wrong tree.?

again any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

    thanks

    Steve

  211. Coaster Says:

TAN, this doesn’t work for my friend either, we get the same error as you no matter what combo of username and password we enter. Perhaps it’s the SIM card?

  212. Dan Says:

If your on contract you could try:

    APN: internet
    Username: Web
    Password: Webs

  213. james Says:

    AMAZIN!!! well done boys

  214. Cate Says:

    @Steve
I had your problem and would suggest the Ziphone software - try http://www.ziphone.org
I will warn you though - it can take ages as you get lost down various different blogs from people using macs.

  215. lawrence Says:

Confusion seems to reign here;if you want to activate, jailbreak and unlock a 2G iphone with a pc then use winpawn via simonblog website-its dead easy-unlocking a 3G phone using software isn’t available yet;if you want to use the internet with vodafone edge settings on the iphone you must reset the edge settings first or turn them on using Bigboss’ preferences downloaded via Cydia before entering the passwords for vodafone mentioned above!

  216. BobaFett Says:

    Hi Guys!

I’ve got an iPhone bought in the states in March, and its unlocked and jailbroken and working fine, the only problem I’ve got is that I can’t send emails.

This is the message that appears on screen:

    Cannot Send Mail
The connection to the outgoing server “smtp.gmail.com” failed

    Any ideas on this?

Thanks in advance and great website

  217. Neil Says:

I too have a Vodafone contract sim card. Like many here I have obtained an unlocked i phone. I bought it at Barcelona airport. When I got home I opened it up, registered it, upgraded the firmware and it worked with exception of the internet connection. The advice I got here about typing ‘internet’ in the APN setting got me connected. The phone does everything it should (except the virtual voicemail which I think you can only have with O2 in this country). Couple of issues though. Try as I might I cannot get the option of ‘Edge’ in settings. I have tried the solutions offered here but all I ever have is a choice of Enable 3G, Celluar Data Network, Data Roaming, VPN, and Wi-fi - no EDGE option nowhere . Am I missing out not having this over a 3G connection ?

Secondly, this is not so much a question as an observation. I have just come back from abroad (Poland). My iPhone worked fine. Out of curiosity I tried connecting to the internet via the cellular network (I know this is not cheap but Wi-Fi is not always available). I was having problems connecting, strange, it worked in the UK but not abroad. Eventually through trial an error I discovered that if I set the phone Network search to manual rather than automatic I eventually found a Network which worked fine with Vodafone and my i phone, not sure why but it did.

  218. Matt Says:

I wish I had all the success that everyone else seems to be having… Any assistance or advice would be greatly appreciated!!

    I’m in the UK…

I’ve been on blackberry for years, but since buying a MacBook I’ve found that syncing contacts and calendar has been a hassle. I recently bought an O2 Pay&Go iPhone, and thing from http://gadgetcube.com/iPhone/iPhone-Unlock-Sim/iPhone-Unlock-Sim-Version-2.html which has unlocked my phone to vodafone, but often the phone doesn’t accept calls (goes straight to voicemail - though it’s showing full signal) and it doesn’t matter what settings I put in the APN on the iPhone but I don’t seem to be able to get on the net, via Safari, or receive emails, or send SMS…

I’m loving my iPhone with the Pay&Go O2 sim in, but with my Vodafone (contract) sim in it’s a hassle… Have I overlooked some fundamental setting…

  219. Matt Says:

Well, if you have the same prob (as per above) then call Vodafone and order a new SIM. Now all is working perfectly!

  220. ian Says:

    Hi

Can any one recommend the best unlocking company to use as they all say the others are not to be trusted, i have the bought an iphone which another person had on a contract the phone is 3 weeks old and used only once there was no sim with the phone.

    Please help

  221. Danny Aston Says:

I’m going to try these settings to sort out the web connection but can you help with the bluetooth?
My phone will not recognise any other handset and vice versa.
Bluetooth is turned on ok (grey icon) but………. nothing.

star man - couldn’t get this information out of Vodafone!

When I was on pay as you go with iPhone pp.vodafone then web and web worked but when changed to contract stopped working.

  224. James Says:

    Hello

I’m bidding on eBay for an unlocked iPhone and have a few questions i hope to be helped with…

    1) I have a vodafone contract sim, will it work in the iPhone?
    2) When i’m at home home i’ll obviously be using my Wi-Fi home network but if i’m out will it cost me an arm and leg to use Edge or GPRS?
    3) Is downloading apps the same?
    4) I’ve heard horror stories of people with unlocked iPhones going onto iTunes and downloading the latest software version only to find it shut down their iPhone

Anything you can help me with would be awesome

    Cheers :-)

    hello dave,
i just moved to the uk from america and i have an iphone i used with att. i mainly use it for the gps and maps because i travel a lot and its just convenient because i have all my music and other personal items on it. what would you reccomend i use, or should i just get an all new phone and service all together? i’ll be here for the next two or three years and everyone i know had vodafone and they hate it.
    thanks a lot.

  227. Dave Says:

    Justin,

Personally, I’d just get an O2 contract with a new iPhone. It’s daft that you can’t just switch providers, but that’s life :S

  228. Neil Says:

Ok, we now have the new version 3 software for the i phone……. MMS capability, well yes if your carrier supports it. I have a 3G i phone which is SIM free from the states. Used your help last year to get it running by typing in Internet in the APN under settings woks fine. Vodafone support MMS, any geniuses out there who would have an idea how you get the MMS to work, I guess I need to type something in under settings in the MMS section to enable it. Any help would be appreciated.

  229. Dan Says:

UK VODAFONE IPHONE 3G with 3.0 MMS Settings

    Access Point Node (APN)
    wap.vodafone.co.uk

    Username
    user@vodafone.net

    Password
    user

    IP Address (mms proxy)
    212.183.137.012

    MMS Message Server (mmsc)
    http://mms.vodafone.co.uk/servlets/mms/

Then reboot phone by holding down power button till the slider becomes available to slide.

Little camera symbol now becomes available in messages

    JOB DONE :)
