I've managed to upgrade and unlock my old first gen iPhone using the WinPwn method. Tricky at first but can be done. Currently running 2.0 but just about to go 2.0.2.

Think I've sold the old one now I have a 3G 16GB.

In the middle of designing iPhone only website for iPhone browser. Should be fun.

Hi Dave - quick question you may be able to help with. If I buy a Vodafone iPhone in a country where they are legally sold - can I then bring it back to the UK, and use it with Vodafone in the UK? Would that work? Would it require anything funky? And would I run the risk of bricking it? I'm looking for a totally legal way of using an iPhone 3G in the UK, on Vodafone. Any ideas? I'd be happy to consider going to any lengths...!

For those people with an unlocked iPhone trying to use an O2 pay and go SIM but can't find EDGE settings, this worked for me:

Turn off your phone and eject the SIM card, now turn the phone back on (minus the SIM) and EDGE should now appear under SETTINGS-GENERAL-NETWORK, change the APN to payandgo.o2.co.uk and leave the other settings. Now insert your SIM while the phone is still at this screen and switched on. you should now be able to use the internet but not the youtube icon for some reason. The EDGE setting will disappear once you have left this screen but the settings will be saved. Hope this helps.

http://www.filesaveas.com/gprs.html

has a good list of all uk GPRS settings, we have been using this for a while when testing mobile apps on different networks etc...

NB PAYG APNs are sometimes different from contract ones.

other info:
Voda has no EDGE in the UK but lots of HSDPA (except small pockets of test EDGE such as Southampton i think)

O2 has EDGE in the UK but not much HSPDA
